South Carolina Historical Society Placing Finding Aids Online

The South Carolina Historical Society, one of the richest archives for Lowcountry genealogy research, has embarked on a project to place their finding aids online.

Planning a research trip to Charleston? Be sure to bookmark the South Carolina Historical Society's Finding Aids page and check back often to see their new additions.

What Are Finding Aids? How Can They Help Your Research?

Finding aids are detailed inventories of documentary collections, prepared by archivists. While an archive's catalog will give you an overview of a particular collection, finding aids take you much deeper into the collection and help you identify which portions of a collection may be most useful for your research.

Online Finding Aids Can Help You Prepare for Your Research Trip and Save You Valuable Time on the Ground

If you know in advance which boxes and folders you want to view from a given collection, you can make the most of your research time when you arrive.

Let's look at an example from the first batch of online finding aids for the South Carolina Historical Society. The Ball Family Papers are one of the richest collections of plantation records among the South Carolina Historical Society's holdings. If we look at the description of the Ball Family Papers in SCHS's online catalog, we see the following summary:

Ball Family Papers Catalog Summary

Now let's look at a portion of the finding aid for the Ball Family Papers. Here we see much more detail:

Ball Family Finding Aid Detail

Make the Most of Your Research Time in Charleston

Research hint ~ When the South Carolina Historical Society closes in the late afternoon, you can head over to the South Carolina Room and the Charleston Archive at the Charleston Public Library, less than 5 minutes away, and extend your research time into the evening. The South Carolina Room and the Charleston Archive have finding aids online as well, so you can really plan ahead!

WEDDED ON WHEELS

Novel Experience of a South Carolina Couple

Greenville. Special. -- The passengers and crew of the Southern train between Columbia and Greenville were treated to an unusual attraction, being witnesses to the marriage of Miss Riggs of Orangeburg to Mr. Holloway of Chappells, which was solemnized while the train was speeding along between Helena and Silver Street at the rate of 45 miles an hour. Miss Riggs was en route to Abbeville to visit the family of her uncle there. Mr. Holloway and a couple of friends boarded the train at Prosperity, having arranged that the minister should get on at Newberry. As soon after leaving Newberry as possible the marriage took place and the happy folks left the train at Chappells, where they will reside.

Index of Crop Liens, James Island, Charleston County, SC, 1885 to 1894

Immediately following the Civil War, group labor contracts were the means by which the transition from slave to paid agricultural labor was made. After the Freedmen's Bureau withdrew from the southern states, contract labor gave way to tenant farming and the crop lien system.

Under the crop lien system, merchants extended credit to individual farmers who borrowed against the anticipated value of future crops. When the harvest was made, farmers repaid the merchant from the proceeds [1].

Sometimes the crop proceeds were sufficient to repay the lender. If they were not, the farmer would begin the new growing season working to repay ever-increasing debts in a cycle historians have termed debt peonage. The crop lien system, though often harmful to the autonomy of individual farmers, was the means by which southern agriculture was rebuilt in the years following the Civil War [2].

From 1885 to 1894, cotton merchant Joseph T. Dill extended credit to farmers on James Island and in rural Charleston County. Below is an index of the liens. The original documents can be accessed on microfilm at the Register of Mesne Conveyance, Charleston County Courthouse, O.T.
