Biographical Information
Thomas Drayton was the youngest son of Thomas Drayton (d. 1760) and his second wife Lady Mary MacKenzie. He was only a year old when his father died. Little is known of his young life. At the age of seventeen John joined Colonel Francis Marion's cavalry and served in the Revolutionary War. His life after the war was difficult: sometime after 1784 he was beset by mental illness. By 1786 he was adjudged insane and declared incapable of managing his estate.
By 1788 the young man seemed to be back on his feet; his estate was returned to him and he assumed management of his affairs. He made his home at Crowfield Plantation, a 600 acre plantation near Beaufort. He never married and died intestate in May of 1801 at the age of forty-two [6].
